What are your four ‘must-have’ pedals? That is what we ask our guests to share with you in our Four On the Floor podcast segment.
Greg is one of the three founders of 3 Monkeys amps and solderless cables. He has spent the majority of his loosely termed “adult” life in the throws of the guitar world as a roadie and tech so he is an authority on great gear. Not to mention he helped create one of the best amplifier brands out there and has carried that thinking over to their line of pedalboard cables. If you are not familiar with 3 Monkeys do yourself a favor and check it out. He gave us a fantastic interview too! You can hear the episode for yourself right here. 1. Bearfoot FX – Sea Blue EQ
“This pedal is over ten years old, and Bjorn Juhl doesn’t make it anymore. I hung out with him in Stockholm at his tiny shop all day one day, and he was digging out all these obscure parts to give me, and picking my brain about what I like and don’t like, and when I got home from tour, this was waiting for me. The sound is actually kind of hard to explain, it’s got a little bit of boost but mostly its an EQ and emulates a tube amp really well. Bjorn is really into HiWatt amps so it has that feel. Its a really great pedal and I love it and have used it on every board since I got it. Thanks Bjorn, you’re a genius!!” Check out the Bearfoot FX – Sea Blue EQ
2. Electro-Harmonix – Holy Grail Reverb
“I love Ryan Adams reverb sound, and this is a key component to it. This is the original in the big old style enclosure. It’s one of those pedals that just has that “thing.” The original Holy Grail is like a spring reverb but it has a certain element of space to it. When we were designing our first amp, The Orangutan, we used a smaller tank reverb and dialed back the dwell on it, so it sounds like a room ‘verb which reminds me a bit of the Holy Grail. It’s there but doesn’t get in your way.” Check out the Electro-Harmonix – Holy Grail Reverb
3. TC stereo Chorus+Pitch Modulator & Flanger
“I love this pedal, especially if I am splitting two amps in stereo, hey if its good enough for Eric Johnson, it’s good enough for me. I’ve been using one of these since the late 80’s, AC cord and all. I don’t normally use a ton of chorus but this really does sound pretty nice. I typically run two different amps (my 3 Monkeys EL84 amp The Chimpster, and one of my vintage Fenders, either a Deluxe of a Princeton) and this gives two unique sounds through each of them.” Check out the TC stereo Chorus+Pitch Modulator & Flanger
4.Digitech Dirty Robot
“This is a synth emulator type pedal that just makes really cool weird sounds. I have an old Roland GR-300 Guitar Synth like the one Jimmy Page used in the 80’s on the Death Wish soundtracks, this will do a bit of that. Think of Rush – Moving Pictures era type analog synth sounds on one voice, and a vocoder on another voice. It will also do some Square Wave with Sub and Octave voices. Not an everyday pedal, but great for goofing around with.” Check out the Digitech Dirty Robot
Huge thanks to Greg and 3 Monkeys for being a guest on our show and please check out 3 Monkeys. We wish him continued success!
