FOUR ON THE FLOOR-BLAKE WYLAND FOUNDER OF TONE MOB

The Guitar Knobsblog

What are your four ‘must-have’ pedals? That is what we ask our guests to share with you in our Four On the Floor podcast segment. Blake is a driving force in the guitar world via his podcast and other endeavors. He is also a pedal fiend, so this was a very difficult choice. If you are not familiar with The Tone Mob do yourself a favor and check them out. He gave us a fantastic interview too! You can hear the episode for yourself right here. Check out these choices for his Four On The Floor.

1. Wrought Iron Effects – Orcrist Overdrive

“It just brings a huge smile to my face because it has a sword on it that lights up. So let’s, let’s be honest, you can’t go wrong there, and it just looks amazing and it sounds absolutely incredible. It’s a great overdrive. Ed does excellent work. When people have asked me what my favorite overdrive the last few months, that’s the one I tend to point people to because I just really, really like it.

2. Keeley – Loomer Fuzz

“I love the Loomer the fuzz circuit in it is really cool. It sounds sort of op-amp, MUFF-ish like that. I think that’s kind of the angle they were going for. It’s got a couple of different EQ modes on it—full, flat, and scooped but actually the full sounds the best to me. It’s a great sounding pedal. For those who don’t know, it’s a fuzz and reverb, but there’s like some crazy reverse reverb stuff going on—some weird modulation things happening. The idea around it was not to completely replicate Kevin Shields’ pedalboard, but get as close as possible in a one pedal format. So that one covers a lot of ground.

3. SolidGoldFX – Electroman MKII Modulated Delay

The original electro man was actually the first delay pedal that I ever bought and I really liked it and I played it for years. It’s basically a modulated delay, with the effects and effects loop so you can plug other pedals into there and impact the repeats, which is obviously a ton of fun. And then it’s got a warp switch, and that’s your runaway switch, so you want to hold it and let the repeats kind of just go crazy—that switch is your friend—it’s a momentary foot switch. The mark two is actually surprisingly much better sounding. The circuit is completely different and there are a lot more options and tails and it has a lot more range on the controls, so brighter and darker repeats then the original, plus all the good stuff that I liked from the original.

4. Mr. Black Super Moon Eclipse – Modulated Reverberator

The way it sounds in stereo is really impressive. I know Jack really well and he puts a ton of effort into things that most people don’t even consider. And you and most players may not even realize it until you plug it in and actually listen to it. What I like about it obviously modulated reverb. The supermoon is kind of a modern classic sounding reverb and this pedal gives you the Eclipse and the Supermoon Chrome and also a true stereo in and out. So that’s two distinct audio paths that are completely separated from each other. One thing I love about the new pedals that they’re making is the way they implemented expression control honestly should be industry standard. I have no idea why they were the first to do this. All the knobs are expression ready—they can be controlled via expression if you want. And how do you assign what’s expression and what’s not? You just turn the knob all the way up. That’s it. There’s no menu to scroll through, you don’t tap anything or wave it back and forth and hold your tongue to the roof of your mouth just right or whatever the case may be. You just turn the knob all the way up. That one’s expression control. Now, do that at the show with no hesitation, right in the middle of the show. It’s really easy and you just look down like, oh, that’s one’s on. I think that needs to be the new normal.
