FOUR ON THE FLOOR – GABRIEL CURRIE OF ECHOPARK GUITARS

The Guitar Knobsblog

What are your four ‘must-have’ pedals? That is what we ask our guests to share with you in our Four On the Floor podcast segment.

Gabriel is one of the most prominent boutique guitar builders on the scene and has a knack for tone, as is evident in his choices for his four pedals. If you are not familiar with Echopark Guitars do yourself a favor and check him out. He gave us a fantastic interview too! You can hear the episode for yourself right here. Check out Gabriel’s choices for his Four On The Floor.

1. The Roland/Boss – CE-1 Chorus Ensemble

“This was the first dual pedal of its kind, in that it had a vibrato section and a chorus section which would sound today as the equivalent of a Rotovibe or that type of thing. Is has this marvelous analog decay and a magnificent swirlyness that I still have not found a substitute for. In my early recording days, I would set up two Princeton amps with the vibratos set at different rates with a little bit of chorus on it which would kind of replicate that sound.”

2. Ross – Distortion

“If you can find one, get it. It just had overdrive and level controls, and a big ol’ power plug. It just sounds like the perfect cranked amp. I started playing them in 1985 or so, and I still have a soft spot for them.”

3. Electro-Harmonix – LPB-1 Power Booster

“The staple, the beginning of external pre-amp overdrives as far as I’m concerned. It’s a single transistor, very simple. They all varied a bit because of the builds, but if you want to find the ultimate in overdrives, like at 10-15 Db punch in the (expletive), that’s what you want to get. It was not very practical however because you had to plug it into the guitar then plug the cable into the box, so maybe not technically a pedal but still the same purpose. It was the beginning of that whole overdrive pedal thing. *Note the judges will allow this entry though technically not a pedal.”

4. Ibanez – Analog Delay AD-80

“These things sounded like something in between tape and digital. I don’t know what they did, how they did that thing, but it doesn’t exist anywhere to this day.”
