What are your four ‘must-have’ pedals? That is what we ask our guests to share with you in our Four On the Floor podcast segment. Josh likes things effective but simple as is reflected in his pedal choices. If you are not familiar with Treetone Guitars do yourself a favor and check them out. He gave us a fantastic interview too! You can hear the episode for yourself right here. Check out these choices for his Four On The Floor.
1. Fulltone – OCD Overdrive
“So this guy currently is my always-on pedal actually. I set the drive real low so it just kind of gooses the front end of the amp, pop the volume up a bit and it just sounds nice. The OCD gives it that character, it needs a little bit of hair, but it’s, it’s almost clean, you know? I never used to play the OCD that way. I would have some gain on the amp already and that would just take it over the edge, like a solo boost or something like that. It’s probably my favorite pedal now being that it’s literally on all the time.“

2. Lovepedal – Gen 5 Echo
“Delay has been big for me for a while. This is an analog delay. You don’t see them very often oddly enough. I think it was like a musician’s friend or guitar center special product way back when. I went in one to get an MXR Carbon Copy because all I wanted to do was set those knobs all the way up and get that crazy feedback oscillation for like trippy parts of songs and whatnot which analog delays are great for. They had this Lovepedal Gen 5 Echo on special. I plugged into it and it was really cool. But the thing that really sold me was that it has this little trim pot on the top for a boost. So pretty much you can use it as if you’re going into a solo or something and it’s putting a delay on as well as giving you a little kick. With the boost, your volume goes up so the amp gets hit a little bit harder, saturates a bit more, and you’ve got that echo on there. Um, and being that it’s an analog echo, it’s got a sweet slap back sound. It is kind of a unique pedal that you don’t see too often anymore.”

3. Line 6 – DL4 Delay
“It’s a pretty darn popular pedal, or at least it used to be, but you’re still seeing it on boards these days. I remember, you know, maybe about a decade or so ago, they were on everybody’s board. I got this probably five years ago, so I was way late on that one. So this is digital delay and it’s got a different flavor compared to analog. That being said, it models like every great delay there’s ever been. So you can get just about any sound out of it, even though it’s a digital pedal. It’s got the three presets on those so my first preset is a slapback delay. The second preset would be an analog delay with a longer decay. Then the third preset, which is probably the one I use the most, was just a straight-up digital delay. But, what was big for me was the tap tempo. I never had a delay with a tap tempo before that one.”

4. Electro-Harmonix – Holy Grail Nano Reverb
“One of the most simple pedals out there. The one I have is the little micro pedal, so it’s super small. Just sits there at the end of the pedal chain. It has a three-way selector switch on it which has Spring, Hall, and Flerb. I always use it in the spring mode, so it’s just kinda got a vintage reverb sound to it. Funny enough though, my little toggle switch that switches in and out of the modes has been broken for years now so I kind of have to fidget with to get it to stick in one setting or the other which is fine if you only want to use it in spring mode, but every now and then it’ll, it’ll flip into the Flerb mode and you’ll know instantly. You’re like, what the, what the hell is that? What’s going on in the trail there? But yeah, it’s a solid pedal. You really can’t go wrong with a single knob pedal.“
