What are your four ‘must-have’ pedals? That is what we ask our guests to share with you in our Four On the Floor podcast segment.
Matthew just may be the biggest fan of Novo guitars, which is cool considering it is his dream job. Helping Dennis Fano produce some of the most sought-after guitars out there takes up most of his time but when he is not making us drool over the latest Instagram photo he is playing his own Novo. If you are not familiar with Novo Guitars do yourself a favor and check him out. He gave us a fantastic interview too! You can hear the episode for yourself right here. Check out Matthew’s choices for his Four On The Floor.
1. Earthquaker Devices – Dispatch Master Delay & Reverb
“My all-time favorite, mostly because I’m a horrible player (at least in my head) and you turn this baby on and you just get a bit extra of everything. I like to set it up with a little bit of slap with a little bit of reverb on it so its echo-y and fun and just fattens everything up a bit. Since I’ve had this pedal I believe I have improved as a player because it gives me a lot more space to work with. I just love this pedal. It is perfect.”

2. Earthquaker Devices – Speaker Cranker Overdrive
“I wanted a pedal that I could use in any situation. It just gives you more of whatever you have going on. If you are running clean it gives you a little bit more hair, if you are running a dirty amp it gives you a little bit more push. It’s one big knob and it is more than a boost. It has a touch of personality to the tone. It sounds awesome cranked up all the way too. This is a pedal I will have on every board from here on out. I bought it on a whim because I like Earthquaker and the price was right. For me, it is invaluable because I’m one of those people who are never happy with their overdrive…ever, and I know that if I have this going I can figure out any situation that I’m in. “

3. JHS – Superbolt Overdrive
“I’ve always struggled with getting the right fuzz pedal. In concept I want to use fuzz–I listen to a lot of music that has fuzz, I want to play music that has fuzz, but I have never gotten the right sound. This is not really a fuzz pedal but it gets into that territory. It is based on the old Supro amps, and I went through a really strong Telecaster phase and if you put these two together you basically have Led Zeppelin 1, and I love that sound. I used this pedal as a gateway to come out of full-blown distortion in my playing and still be comfortable with my meaty riffs.”

4. Teese – Real McCoy Wizard Wah
“I got this in the early 2000’s to use with heavier music I was playing at the time. I was never a Cry-Baby classic 70’s soundtrack wah fan. This has a really wide sweep to it and is one of the first ones that I ever encountered that had that. It is really expressive and interesting and does not have just one mode. It sounds awesome you can get so much range of tone with it. ”
